The weekly(ish) roundup of internet finds:

Things That Are Awesome, Vol. 108

leo

Yes, I took a month-long hiatus from my roundups of internet awesomeness (I blame frequent travel and a sickness likely brought on by frequent travel), but there are too many online gems for me to stay away forever. So, let’s get back to it. Here are the things I found awesome this week:

  1. My new Instagram obsession is My Day With Leo. And speaking of Leo, here’s a really weird, random thing you never knew you needed: The Wolf of Wall Street Chest Thump Mix.
  2. These all seem pretty accurate: Mean Girls Characters: Where Are They Now?
  3. Adorableness abounds: Here Is What Happens When You Put Dogs in a Photo Booth.
  4. So many emoji things, so little time: The 58 Yellow Smiley Emojis, Defined and This Emoji Video for Beyonce’s “Drunk in Love” Is Strangely Moving.
  5. Anything that says U of M is 2.67 times more influential than OSU is a good thing in my book: How Influential Is Your School?
  6. I’ve been marathon watching House of Cards all week, so I was already on a Kevin Spacey high, but then I saw this and decided I love him even more: Kevin Spacey Responds to Rob Ford’s Attack with a Friendly Photo.
  7. Love this video: First Kiss (also, as someone who spent a large portion of her elementary/middle school years as a devoted soap opera watcher, I obviously was excited because: Opal from All My Children! I’m sort of sad that I recognized her immediately.)
  8. Also love the inevitable parody response to that video from Jimmy Fallon: First Lick (it’s dogs and kittens, FYI, in case you were disturbed).
  9. Make sure you click over to page two of this article because they get even better: Jenny McCarthy’s Twitter Hashtag Hijacked by Pro-Vaccine Critics.
  10. I have no idea how this guy pulled this off: Disney and Pixar Sings Let It Go.

Things That Are Awesome, Vol. 107

The weekly roundup of internet finds:

  1. I went 12 for 12, obviously: Can You Guess Famous Mean Girls Lines From Just a Freeze Frame?
  2. A pretty solid mashup: Hollywood Movie Dance Tribute.
  3. I mean…she’s the best, basically: Oscar Winner Helen Mirren’s Twerking Talents.
  4. Because why not: Downton Tabby.
  5. If you are a Harry Potter fan, you no doubt heard the news this week that J.K. Rowling regrets pairing off Ron and Hermione. This sums up my feelings on the matter perfectly: An Open Letter to J.K. Rowling.
  6. I’ve read a lot of articles about Philip Seymour Hoffman this past week, but this one is the most powerful: One of Ours: The New York Legacy of Philip Seymour Hoffman. Would have loved to see him play Willy Loman.
  7. Being overseas, I didn’t actually watch any of the Super Bowl (or the halftime show or 95% of the commercials), but I can still enjoy Super Bowl-related things nonetheless. Exhibit A: Aziz Ansari’s Imaginary Friday Night Light’s Super Bowl Was Better Than the Actual Super Bowl.
  8. The Full House guys reunited on Jimmy Fallon, and it was everything this ’90s child could have ever wanted.
  9. I’m pretty sure I remember a lot of these: 28 Valentine’s Day Cards You Haven’t Seen Since the ’90s.
  10. Pretty much sums up 99% of why I love the Winter Olympics: Entertainment Weekly’s Ice Skating Supercut.

Things That Are Awesome, Vol. 100 (AKA, My Greatest Hits)

Over the two plus years I’ve had this little blog, I’ve started several projects that I haven’t exactly followed through with, despite the best of intentions. But one project I have not abandoned is this one, my weekly roundup of fun internet finds. In celebration of the fact that this is my one hundredth (!!) time writing a “Things That Are Awesome” post, I thought it would be fun to feature some of my all-time favorite items from the previous 99 posts. So herein I present, Things That Are Awesome: The Greatest Hits.

From Volume 1 – One of my all-time favorite Game of Thrones parodies, Damn It Feels Good to Be a Lannister.

From Volume 4 – Mindy Kaling’s hilarious and on-point guide to women in the movies, Flick Chicks.

From Volume 5 – A supremely well-done video chronicling 100 Years of Street Style in East London.

From Volume 9 – The Kim Kardashian Divorce Skit from SNL still makes me laugh so hard. The Bruce Jenner face!

From Volume 11 – And Beyonce’s I Was Here video still makes me cry. We all bow down to Bey.

From Volume 14 – I can’t imagine how long it took her to make this, but I’m glad she did: One Woman A Capella Disney Medley.

From Volume 15 – Anyone who has been reading this blog for a second could tell you I’m a die hard Love Actually fan, which is why the oh-so-funny Hate Actually article is still one of my favorite things.

From Volume 16 – I’m always rooting for Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt to wind up together, but in the meantime, I’ll just enjoy them singing What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve? together.

From Volume 18 – This Hunger Games Spoof Trailer kills me. The reaction when Prim is reaped = priceless.

From Volume 21 – Another SNL skit I’m mildly majorly obsessed with, Bein’ Quirky with Zooey Deschanel. Kristen Wiig’s Bjork will never, ever get old. Never ever. (“I made a sweater for an octopus. Plus I left one extra hole for its dreams and ideas.”)

From Volume 29 – Chandler Bing is my favorite Friends character (no questions asked), so I love this tumblr: Chandler Dances on Things.

From Volume 33 – Of all the elaborate proposal videos I’ve seen on the interwebs, this one just might take the cake.

From Volume 34 – This tweet from Lena Dunham will forever and always give me chills.

From Volume 37 – Fighting the good fight against font snobbery: I’m Comic Sans, Asshole.

From Volume 41 – Any comparison to Mean Girls is a good one in my book, but this one is especially wonderful: The US Women’s Gymnastics Team as Mean Girls.

From Volume 42 – My hatred for 50 Shades of Grey knows no bounds; thus, this Goodreads review is sheer brilliance.

From Volume 46 – Overlaying Mitt Romney quotations on Lucille Bluth pictures is endlessly amusing to me, even a year after the election.

From Volume 48 – Beautiful photographs of Newman and Woodward. Doesn’t get much more lovely than those two.

From Volume 51 – I go to Williams-Sonoma and want to buy ALL THE THINGS, but I find this funny anyway: The Hater’s Guide to the Williams-Sonoma Catalog.

From Volume 54 – As any Arrested Development fan knows, you have got to watch the show multiple times to truly appreciate the layers upon layers of jokes: 53 Arrested Development Jokes You Probably Missed.

From Volume 57 – The 26 Most Puzzling Photographs of Leonardo DiCaprio Ever Taken. I’ll never let go, Leo. I’ll never let go.

From Volume 60 – In which I reiterate that I want to be Jennifer Lawrence’s best friend: 22 Jennifer Lawrence Reaction GIFs.

From Volume 63 – The award for the best Honest Trailer ever goes to…The Notebook.

From Volume 68 – Just dying: Family Feud Fails.

From Volume 70 – I know she took some heat for her alleged lack of professionalism, but I love her: News Anchor Laughs at Ryan Lochte. Jeah!

From Volume 74 – Check out these 20 Hilarious Pinterest Fails. Nailed it.

From Volume 79 – This makes me smile: 21 Heartwarming and Beautiful Facts About Mr. Rogers.

From Volume 82 – My all-time favorite Pinterest board has to be My Imaginary Well-Dressed Toddler.

From Volume 85 – At last, a correction to the first song I remember really loving: It’s Finally Ironic.

From Volume 87 – It’s about time for a West Wing marathon re-watch, no? The West Wing Cast Just Caught up over Twitter and It Was the Best.

From Volume 90 – Two of my favorites, being hilarious together: Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake and hashtags. #sogood.

From Volume 91 – It’s tough to think of a better way to spend your Thursday nights than playing the Scandal Drinking Game, amirite?!?

From Volume 94 – Stunning accuracy: If Every Big Ten School Were a Parks and Rec Character. Nobody likes you, Jerry!

From Volume 97 – My love for Aziz Ansari knows no bounds: Aziz Ansari Just Compared Spoiled Youth to World’s Most Hated Font, Comic Sans.

Things That Are Awesome, Vol. 90

The weekly roundup of internet wonderfulness:

  1. The title of this article says it all: Oh My God, There’s a Cat in Russia That Wears a Bow Tie and Works as a Librarian.
  2. I loathe raisins, so I wholeheartedly endorse this article: 19 Reasons Raisins Should Be Put in Jail.
  3. A few weeks ago, I posted a link to one of my all-time favorite West Wing clips, CJ Doing the Jackal. Well, it turns out that my timing was oddly prescient, because Allison Janney just performed a reprise of the Jackal on Arsenio Hall last week. Too good.
  4. JGL makes the world a better place: Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Nicki Minaj Lip Sync.
  5. The bits to announce the nominees for Outstanding Writing in a Variety Series at the Emmys are always great, but this year had one of the best ever – the Oprah/Jimmy Kimmel collaboration. Brilliant.
  6. Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake should do everything together, always. Like this: Justin Timberlake Shows Us How Dumb We Sound When We Use Hashtags.
  7. This is either adorable or completely stupid: Man Using Cluster Balloons Like in Up Lands in Newfoundland.
  8. Welp, this describes 99.9% of Facebook: OHMYGOSH Go Read This Link I Posted.
  9. Dying of cuteness: Seal Wants to Snuggle Woman Sitting on Beach.
  10. Sometimes Twitter can be a source of awesomeness: 26 of the Best Responses to the Post’s 300 Sandwiches Story.

Things That Are Awesome, Vol. 54

dog christmas lights

In a belated celebration of the season, the first half of this list is Christmas-related. The second half? Just your average, everyday awesome.

  1. Bo Inspects the White House Holiday Decorations. So damn cute.
  2. 30 Dogs Who Think They Are Christmas Trees. I both find this adorable and wonder why so many people feel compelled to wrap their pets in Christmas lights. But mostly I find it adorable.
  3. This is amazing: a Downton Abbey gingerbread house.
  4. I love this so much: Mariah Carey, Jimmy Fallon, and the Roots perform “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”
  5. This cannot be real, right? Gangnam Style Christmas Lights.
  6. As a lifelong Midwesterner, I find this article on point: 23 Reasons to Date a Midwesterner.
  7. This cheered me up immensely during finals: The 40 Greatest Dog GIFs of All Time.
  8. I love this movement: 26 Random Acts of Kindness for Sandy Hook.
  9. I played in a handbell choir in elementary school and, let me tell you, we were not this good. Amazing.
  10. This blew my mind: 53 Arrested Development Jokes You Probably Missed. I always knew this show had amazingly detailed jokes but…whoa.

Things That Are Awesome, Vol. 38

The weekly roundup of cool stuff I found while wasting time on surfing the internet:

  1. Last week, Google had one of my favorite Google Doodles ever in celebration of Gustav Klimt’s 150th birthday. Love that painting.
  2. A list of 30 Things Every Woman Should Have and Should Know by Age 30. I love that this was written in 1997 and still completely applies to women today. Some things are always true.
  3. Jimmy Fallon’s “At the Bar with Roger Federer” segment is, in a word, amazing.
  4. Who knew a montage of Don Draper saying “what?” could be so awesome? Well, you’ll know after you watch the video.
  5. Slightly Insulting Chicago Posters. Though I have only a summer’s worth of knowledge to draw upon, I found these pretty accurate – and quite funny too.
  6. I don’t want to get too political here, but there’s a distinct possibility that I may feel compelled to laugh at Mitt Romney a lot over the coming months. On that note – Mitt Romney Looking Longingly at People.
  7. This is, hands down, the most hilarious article I have read in a loooong time: Will You Still Medal in the Morning?, about sex at the Olympics. There are so many amazing quotes in it, but I particularly loved the female BMX biker who compared male Olympic gymnasts to “lovable little Ewoks.” Trust me, read this article.
  8. This article is hilarious too, while also making me seriously question the future of mankind: American Baby Names Are Somehow Getting Even Worse. If you thought Apple was bad, you’re in for a real treat with this article, let me tell you.
  9. An Angela Merkel Rainbow. Girl knows how to work her colors.
  10. Anderson Cooper totally takes down Rush Limbaugh. I cannot tell you how delighted that video makes me. Rush is the worst.

Things That Are Awesome, Vol. 34

(Image via Late Night with Jimmy Fallon)

The kinda-sorta-weekly-ish roundup of awesome stuff I found on the internet:

  1. The Overthinking Person’s Drinking Game. Yep. Just yep.
  2. I saw this tweet, from Lena Dunham, last week and loved it immediately. So good.
  3. The Wheel of Lunch – never choose your lunch again; let internet magic choose it for you. I am the queen of indecision, so I kinda like this idea.
  4. Jimmy Fallon, Carly Rae Jepsen, and the Roots perform Call Me Maybe. Jimmy Fallon is so lovable.
  5. NBC’s 30 Greatest Summer Olympic Moments. Have I mentioned lately that I’m super excited for the Olympics? Or that watching Kerri Strug land that damn vault still makes me cry?
  6. The second episode of Jimmy Fallon’s Downton Sixbey. Man, I miss Downton.
  7. The Red Hot Chili Peppers sing the Michigan fight song at a concert in…Columbus? Suddenly, I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Hail.
  8. Inception is one of my favorite movies ever (I mean…Leo, JGL, Tom Hardy – what’s not to love?), so you can imagine how much I loved Lego Inception. Very cool.
  9. The 25 Best GIFs in the History of Sports. Numbers 1 and 18 are, in a word, amazing.
  10. This is why I’m proud to attend Michigan Law School. Wow.

Things That Are Awesome, Vol. 16

(photo from here)

Your weekly dose of awesome:

  1. I feel like I say this every time I post one of these lists, but this video is my new favorite, ever. Zooey Deschanel + Joseph Gordon Levitt = adorable overload. And Joseph Gordon Levitt’s voice is so good! Who knew?
  2. I know this happened a few weeks back, but Jimmy Fallon hosting SNL = one of the best things to happen in awhile. Also, the Jimmy Fallon/Tina Fey/Seth Meyers/Amy Poehler joke-off is pure brilliance. These guys should be together in everything, always.
  3. I’m pretty sure Ryan Gosling is overexposed at this point (and no, I’m not talking about all those shirtless scenes in Crazy Stupid Love, ba dum bum), but I still love this. Also, I get all the jokes, which makes me feel like a silly law school nerd. Also, he’s tasty. (That last sentence was unnecessary, I know.)
  4. Wisconsin has been pulling some shenanigans lately, but we all know that Michigan is the only mitten state.
  5. A speculative list of Jay-Z’s 99 problems. Too good.
  6. SNL’s Taran Killam recreates Robyn’s Call Your Girlfriend. I love this song, and I give him major props for basically having the video memorized. And for doing it in a super-confined space. And for wearing a fluffy cropped shirt.
  7. Zeitgeist 2011: Year in Review. This video is so well-done (and I love the song – Sooner or Later, by Mat Kearney).
  8. The trailer for the Dark Knight Rises looks intense and awesome.
  9. Tennis players as children. Too cute. I think baby Andre is the most fun. And one more tennis thing – If you don’t watch tennis, then this is probably not very funny. But if you do watch it (perhaps obsessively), then it’s downright hilarious.
  10. A seal crying. Awwwwww. Is this not the most heartbreaking thing you’ve ever seen?

Things That Are Awesome, Vol. 12

(image via GQ)

This week’s most awesome finds:

  1. Odds Are, You Probably Don’t Exist. A fascinating idea to consider.
  2. I’ve pretty much given up on Glee; I quit watching after the first episode of this season because it’s gotten downright awful at times. However, I saw this clip floating around the internet and I have to say it’s an amazing mash-up. You can’t go wrong with Adele.
  3. Those Who Stay Will Redeem Themselves – probably my favorite article about last weekend’s victory over Ohio State.
  4. Okay, these vintage ads are decidedly not awesome, but they did make me laugh at how ridiculous they are. They are all offensive, but my personal vote for the worst would be: Most men ask, “is she pretty?,” not, “is she clever?”
  5. I love this so much – Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake are two of GQ’s Men of the Year, and their interview and pictures together make me so happy. Adorable.
  6. This video, where Diane von Furstenberg talks about her travel philosophy, is great. First, I love DvF (one of the all-time most stylish women). Second, the illustrations are so charming.
  7. This sounds like the best trip ever. Aziz Ansari AND David Chang in Tokyo, drinking Zima? Hilarity ensues.
  8. Nostalgia Fact-Check: a series of blog posts on New York Magazine’s website, re-examining old movies/TV shows/music. This is such a fun idea (and perhaps one I might steal for my own blog?). I especially love the posts on Dawson’s Creek and Ace of Base – two things that, I’ll admit, I loved way back in the day, but that don’t hold up quite so well now.
  9. I found this compilation of analogies, and some of them are hilarious (some hilariously good, others hilariously bad). I have no idea why, but I think I liked this one the best: “The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn’t.”
  10. I can’t believe I’ve never seen this before. Damn right, that’s hurting my scar. I’ll never be able to hear “Milkshake” the same way again.
