The weekly roundup of internet fabulosity:

  1. After watching the Top Chef finale, I almost felt compelled to write something about it, but then I read this and realized there was no need: he sums up everything I felt perfectly. Love Kristen and Brooke, hate that they didn’t get a final challenge that really allowed them to shine.
  2. I’ve been feeling way too attached to my iPhone lately, so this post resonated: Are You Really as Busy as You Think You Are?
  3. I’ve never understood my generation’s obsession with The Notebook, so naturally I love its Honest Trailer. Best line: “It’s basically the Olive Garden of love stories.”
  4. Amazing piano mash-up: Game of Downton Abbey.
  5. If last season’s MVP of New Girl was Schmidt (by a mile), this year’s is Nick Miller. Here’s why.
  6. This kills me because I was a sophomore circa 2006 and so many things about this are accurate: A Typical Night Studying in 2006. For instance: lofted beds, listening to the Fray, the Dell laptop, and AOL instant messaging.
  7. Leslie and Ben’s wedding on Parks and Rec was one of the most adorable things ever televised. Here’s the story of her unique wedding dress, which could not have been more perfect. And I love that someone at NBC made a Pinterest board of the wedding.
  8. I can’t get over how cool Michelle Obama is: Evolution of Mom Dancing.
  9. This is a cool concept for a photography project: 14 photographers take one picture of their kids, every week for a year. Some great images here.
  10. Because I love Jennifer Lawrence and don’t enjoy Anne Hathaway so much, I thought this was pretty on point: Why Do Women Hate Anne Hathaway (and Love Jennifer Lawrence)?.

  1. Women Will Buy Basically Anything Related to Jane Austen. That is true, and I am one of those women. Not ashamed.
  2. I can’t stop laughing about this picture. Poor guy!
  3. This sums up how all ’90s nostalgia makes me feel: Hey ’90s Kid, You’re Old.
  4. Speaking of which, this Microsoft ad also taps into that ’90s nostalgia. My favorite line? “Lunch was a puzzle, not a picture.”
  5. Let’s be honest: I love Puppy Bowl a lot more than I love the Super Bowl.
  6. Sheer brilliance: Les Mean Girls.
  7. If you watch New Girl (which you should), you’ve probably seen the gang play True American. Now you can too: find the rules here and here.
  8. Speaking of New Girl, I hope you watched last week’s episode. That kiss was epic. Speaking of which: Crush of the Week: Nick Miller.
  9. Favorite moment of the Super Bowl? J Hud and the Sandy Hook kids. You’re not supposed to cry at the Super Bowl but dammit I did.
  10. Second favorite moment of the Super Bowl? Jay-Z and Beyonce hugging. I can’t even.

The weekly roundup of incredible internet finds:

  1. This article, America’s Slippery Slope into Britishisms, is great. I am afraid to admit that I use many of these phrases – in fact, my old clients used to tease me for constantly saying “no worries” (Come on! That’s not really British, right?)
  2. This is weird and wonderful: Tom Hanks Performs Slam Poetry about Full House.
  3. Downton Abbey impressions. This guy is so good – I especially love his Mrs. Pattmore and Mr. Carson. (Warning: don’t watch if you haven’t seen Downton Season 3 yet – there are some spoilers).
  4. This is fascinating: Scenes from WW2 Photoshopped onto Today’s Streets.
  5. Urban Outfitters is now selling Lisa Frank products. I never shop at Urban Outfitters but suddenly have an urge to go…
  6. In celebration of this week’s holiday, The Halloween Candy Hierarchy. My favorite is #10: “I honestly have no idea who goes in the candy aisle and comes out with a Crunch Bar or a plain M&M, but I assume they’re Republicans.”
  7. The gag reel for New Girl Season One. I want to be friends with this cast.
  8. The 45 Best Pictures Of Scared Bros At A Haunted House. So good.
  9. Though it took me awhile to warm up to him, I grew to be a big fan of Anthony Bourdain and No Reservations, which ends its run this fall. Here’s a look back at some of his favorite shows. My favorite? The 2006 Beirut episode, which was one of the more powerful things I’ve seen on TV.
  10. As everyone in America undoubtedly knows, it’s Election Eve. If you’re still undecided, let Chris Rock help you figure out who to vote for.

Tuesday Top Ten: Schmidt Moments

I know people have mixed reactions to New Girl (you either love it or you think Zooey Deschanel is a twee, tight-wearing, not-at-all-adorkable annoyance). Me? I love it, clearly, and that’s largely because of Schmidt, the breakout character and frequent saving grace of season one. Schmidt is hilarious, and Max Greenfield is flat-out brilliant in this role.

In celebration of a new season full of Schmidt shenanigans (the show premiered last week and the awesomeness continues tonight), I thought I would compile my top ten Schmidt moments from season one (though there were so many amazing moments it was hard to narrow it down to these ten). Can you imagine how many more awesome Schmidt-isms there will be in season two?

(1) The Montage of Schmidt’s Douchebag Jar Violations:

I know some people think New Girl’s recurring “Douchebag Jar” joke is lame, but it always kills me when Schmidt says something Jar-worthy. You can imagine my enthusiasm, then, when New Girl did a whole montage of Schmidt’s Jar violations. Some gems:

  • “Guys, has anyone seen my good pea coat?”
  • “Have you seen my shark skin laptop sleeve?”
  • “Darn it! Has anyone seen my croquet cleats?”
  • “Damn it! I can’t find my driving moccasins anywhere!”

(2) Schmidt’s Cheesy Innuendos:

Only Schmidt could seduce the ladies by comparing sex to cheese. I loved his cheese speech to Cece because it was just so Schmidt: you gotta keep it classy and refined, people. For example: “But we haven’t even gotten to the cheese course. A little sharp-aged cheddar. Manchego. Some buttery Gruyère. You sure you want to miss out? I’m going to slowly peel the wax off your baby bells. How about a little stinky Taleggio? Or maybe some cream cheese. Want some schmear, Cece? Wanna party with Havarti?

(3) All of the Indian Things Schmidt Enjoys:

This monologue was so brilliant that the only way to do it justice is to quote it verbatim. To wit: “I love Slumdog, I love naan…pepper, Ben Kingsley, the stories of Rudyard Kipling. I have respect for cows, of course. I love…the Taj Mahal, Deepak Chopra, anyone named Patel. I love monsoons, I love cobras in baskets. Naveen Andrews. I love mango chutney…really any type of chutney.” So good. Also: you haven’t lived until you have heard Schmidt pronounce “chutney.”

(4) Schmidt’s Fashion Sense:

Part of Schmidt’s essential swagger comes from his impeccable (in his own mind, at least) sense of taste and style. Some examples? He wears driving moccasins and croquet cleats. When he has to walk home, he complains, “I have my slippiest loafers on.” Jess bribes him with a pair of Calvin Klein slacks. And how does Schmidt make sure his skin always looks good? Body gelato, naturally.

(5) Schmidt’s Parkour Moves:

The brilliant thing about Max Greenfield as Schmidt is that he makes tired jokes seem hilarious. For example, Parkour gags have been done before (see: The Office), but perhaps not quite as awesomely as when Schmidt literally bounced off the walls of their loft in his excitement over Cece spending the night. And, making this moment even better, Schmidt capped things off with some mock speed skating moves (“Apolo Anton Ohno!”).

(6) Schmidt Plays Sexy Santa at Work:

Naturally, Schmidt (everyone’s favorite Jewish guy) would play Santa Claus. And, naturally, he would feel the need to put his own…special spin on Mr. Claus. Yep, Schmidt dresses up as sexy Santa every year for his office party. It might be a little scary for the children that attend, but the ladies like it just fine.

(7) Schmidt Cooks Thanksgiving Dinner:

When Jess invited a coworker over for Thanksgiving dinner without actually knowing how to cook Thanksgiving dinner, it was Schmidt who stepped up to make the meal. Of course, this brought out his strongest OCD tendencies: “I wanna let you know up front that I have some control issues in the kitchen. So if I’m gonna do this, I’m cooking the whole meal. I don’t want you touching anything. And I don’t want to hear Schmidt, Schmidt, you’re using too much tarragon.”

(8) Schmidt’s Damp Towel Rage:

If there’s one thing Schmidt hates, it’s a damp towel. His anger over his towels always being damp was hilarious (spoiler alert: it was because Nick always uses them), but you know what was even better? His solution: “I will be putting my dehumidifier and my towel in my room, where nothing ever gets wet.”

(9) Schmidt’s Upside Down, Hanging Sit Ups:

One thing Schmidt knows? How to impress the ladies. When Cece sleeps in his room, Schmidt gets up early, oils his body (of course), and hangs upside down from a pull-up bar, just waiting for her to wake up. My favorite part of this gag? Schmidt would lose consciousness every few seconds. Just how long was he hanging upside down, waiting for Cece? The world may never know.

(10) Schmidt’s Kimono:

The visual of Schmidt in a super-short kimono would be enough to merit inclusion on this list, but Schmidt went even further by opening his mouth. He pronounced kimono hilariously (“keeee-mo-no”) and also couldn’t help but abbreve it: “I just wanna come home, put on my ‘mono and just hang loose man.”

If you watch New Girl, what are your favorite Schmidt moments?

The weekly roundup of internet finds:

  1. 12 Ways to Achieve the Very Best Glamour Shot. You shouldn’t read this if you’re at the library studying or at work in a cubicle, because you will probably laugh out loud and annoy everyone else. So, so good.
  2. I think this movie, premiering on HBO next month, looks awesome. Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen? I’m so there. Clive Owen is…amazing, in a word. And many other adjectives that would completely objectify him.
  3. A crazy 10-day trip around the world – Make It Count. That video is inspiring.
  4. After reading this, I want to go back to Paris and eat croissants. Someone take me there?
  5. This is awesome – a super creative dad took crazy pictures of his two daughters. I think my favorite is the Super Mario Brothers one, but they are all great.
  6. The 21 Absolute Worst Things in the World. All are awful, but especially number 21.
  7. For my next birthday, if someone could make me a Schmidt birthday cake, that would be great. Thanks in advance.
  8. And even more Schmidt – Schmidt’s Workout Video. Seriously, is there a better character on TV right now? I vote no.
  9. So call me, Maeby? I can’t adequately explain how funny I find this.
  10. A friend sent me the link for this website last week, and I love it: Anti-Oppressive Baby Animals.

The weekly roundup of internet wonderfulness:

  1. Downton Abbey trading cards. Why thank you, Vanity Fair.
  2. And, Downton Abbey paper dolls. Just like American Girl paper dolls, except TEN TIMES BETTER.
  3. The To Resolve Project, a collection of New Year’s resolutions illustrated graphically, is fascinating and fun to scroll through.
  4. Love this video – Mark Grist on Girls Who Read. Cheers to celebrating intellectual ladies.
  5. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again – Schmidt is the best character on TV right now. And Fat Schmidt dancing along to Rihanna? Priceless.
  6. Pretty sure I would buy this cereal. Er, I mean, totes sure.
  7. Google Maps Hates OSU. And I love Google.
  8. Whenever I need motivation to do my reading, I’m just going to take a look at Academic Coach Taylor. He’s the best.
  9. Meet Beyonce and Jay-Z’s baby! I love this skit, especially Maya Rudolph as Beyonce, Kristen Wiig as Taylor Swift, and Justin Timberlake as Justin Vernon. I know people always talk about how SNL sucks now compared to the glory days, but I think they’ve been churning out some solid sketches lately.
  10. The “what people think I do/what I actually do” meme is already overplayed, but I actually like this one a lot, mostly because I was a project manager in my former life. The first five images are so-so, but the last one (“what I actually do”) is spot-on. I did the typing-on-a-slanted-laptop thing way too many times on flights back and forth to the west coast.

Jonesing for more awesome? I’ve got ya covered.

The weekly-ish roundup of internet awesomeness:

  1. This week in Downton Abbey internet finds…comparisons of the cast onscreen and off. For some of them the difference is crazy! Particularly Mrs. O’Brien and Mrs. Hughes – both so pretty in real life!
  2. Oh, wait, there’s more Downton. This video (from BBC Comic Relief) is kind of old but SO hilarious. I especially love the girl playing Mary – the way she widens her eyes at everything killed me. And Kim Cattrall as Cora! So good.
  3. Cougar Town comes back on February 14 (what, what! celebrate!). Anyway, here’s a cute video of the cast pitching new names for the show (“Seinfeld and Cox? Oh, that’s weird.”) And, on a related note, if you don’t mind being spoiled on some plot developments – a season 3 highlight reel. Cannot tell you how excited this makes me.
  4. A “make your own music video” with New Girl’s theme song. I thought this was pretty cute, and anytime I get to see the gang do the slo-mo chicken dance is a good time for me.
  5. You know February 14 is Valentine’s Day, but did you know February 13 is Galentine’s Day? You do if you watch Parks and Rec, I’m sure. Find out how to create the perfect Galentine’s Day brunch here. I love Leslie Knope.
  6. Oscar-themed cookies! If I had an extra $75 to blow on something completely meaningless, I’d buy these and throw a fancy Oscar party. Also, there is an Uggie the dog cookie! Too precious to eat, I think.
  7. Ellen DeGeneres, per usual, manages to handle tough situations with humor and grace. Great clip, great message.
  8. What would happen if Lana Del Ray’s Video Games combined with the Hunger Games? This would happened, and it would be fantastic.
  9. If Jean Dujardin starred in every movie, I would not complain.
  10. I love this blog post from Rick Steves. One line, in particular, resonated with me: “It takes discipline to let serendipity trump carefully laid plans.” That is such a good travel philosophy, and one I’m sometimes afraid I forget.

The semi-weekly roundup of internet awesomeness:

  1. One of my favorite places I’ve ever visited was the Cinque Terre, so you can imagine how sad I was to hear about the devastation in Vernazza (torrential rainfall, flooding, and mudslides) last fall. That’s why this project – artists painting the boarded-up doorways in the damaged areas of town – made me so happy. I truly hope the town rebuilds (and the tourism business returns).
  2. Whenever I’m sad, I’m just going to watch this. So much Ron Swanson love!
  3. All the Shit “X People” Say videos are getting old, but I actually enjoyed this one, since before I came to law school I was a project manager for 3 years. These are all true and made me laugh – I especially loved the phone intros and wrap-ups. So, so true. Although, the video did miss some phrases that I waaaay overused: “circle back,” “follow up,” “go-live critical,” “back to baselines,” and “who’s owning this task?”
  4. Paula Deen’s Health Food Cookbook. Is this funny or really, really sad?
  5. How have I never heard of Regretsy before? So hilarious, especially this post. Dying.
  6. Have you seen my croquet cleats? I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – Schmidt from New Girl is the absolute best. This douchebag jar montage from last week’s episode is amazing.
  7. In the next few months, I’m sure I’ll keep mentioning how excited I am for the Hunger Games movie (and how that kind of makes me feel like a silly tween). Anyway, point one is: brace yourselves. And point two is: this parody trailer is fun.
  8. 32 Pictures That Will Make You Say Awwwwww. They weren’t kidding – these really will.
  9. This is an oldie but a goodie – James van der Memes. Dawson crying always makes me laugh.
  10. I haven’t seen Shame yet, so I can’t say if Michael Fassbender deserved an Oscar nomination. However, judging on hotness alone, he did. Thus – 50 Reasons the Oscars Don’t Matter Anymore.

Great Christmas Moments in Pop Culture

I had fun compiling my list of Thanksgiving pop culture moments, and as I was thinking about it, I realized there are many (many) more for Christmas. So, herein, my very favorite pop culture Christmas gems:

Beth Gets Her Piano (Little Women): If you can watch this scene without tearing up, you have no heart. It gets me every time – I think it’s mostly because of the way Claire Danes plays the scene. Her reaction is just so spot-on, overwhelmed and confused and overjoyed, all at the same time.

“Just In Cases” (Love Actually): Well, first of all, this scene involves Colin Firth, so that’s pretty much enough to merit inclusion right there. But, in case you weren’t convinced – I love how this scene builds up – how he goes to her home and she’s not there, and then he walks through town (trailed by random Portuguese family members and townsfolk), and then he goes to the restaurant and sees her standing upstairs. And then afterward, when he says, “You learned English?” and she responds, “Just in cases.” Perfect.

Pam’s Teapot (The Office): This was at the height of the heartbreaking Jim/Pam dynamic on the Office, and it was yet another one of those moments that was so lovely but at the same time so gut-wrenching. Basically, Jim draws Pam’s name in Secret Santa, and he gets her the most perfectly sweet gift, and then Michael messes things up (per usual) and turns it into a Yankee swap, and Dwight ends up with the teapot, and Pam has to trade an iPod to get it back, but she does (because we know that she secretly loves Jim, even though she might not know it yet) (and that was the most run-on sentence I’ve ever written).

In Excelsis Deo (The West Wing): The season 1 Christmas episode still gives me chills, particularly the last scene. The burial part is just executed perfectly, and then I love how, in the parallel scene, the senior staff lines up one by one to listen to the choir. Not shown in the video I linked is another great little moment – when Josh gives Donna, who has been bothering him the entire episode about getting her a present, a book with a sweet inscription in it. Great moment. (And man, did it take forever for those two to get together or what?!)

All I Want for Christmas Is You (Love Actually): This is sort of the big climax scene, where most of the characters come together at a children’s Christmas show. I love when they sing “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” because the little girl totally kills it. I mean, even better than Mariah, I think (sacrilege!). Anyway, I also love how the curtain comes up on Hugh Grant and his assistant making out, but not for the reason you think. What kills me is Alan Rickman’s reaction shot in the audience – cheering and whistling. I don’t know why, but I always find that so funny. Maybe because I always think of him as a serious, stuffy British actor, but in this scene he’s anything but.

The Reindeer Jumper (Bridget Jones’s Diary): Okay, I believe this scene technically takes place on New Year’s Day, but it’s still the holiday season so I’m counting it (plus, reindeer clearly equals Christmas). This is the moment that establishes Mr. Darcy as a complete dork, and even though he’s kind of jerk in this scene, you just know he’s going to turn out wonderful. I also love that this scene introduces Bridget’s propensity for extremely awkward over-sharing (“Was at a party in London last night, I’m afraid I’m a bit hungover…Wish I could be home with my head in a toilet like all normal people…”)

Exchanging Presents (While You Were Sleeping): I think this is one of the most underrated romantic comedies (and movies) ever. It stars a pre-fame Sandra Bullock, and I just love it, even though it has basically the cheesiest setup ever. I particularly love the scene where she goes over to the Callaghan family’s home to exchange Christmas presents. I think the look on Sandra Bullock’s face is just perfect – she doesn’t have any family of her own, and so she feels both happy and sad at being included in this family’s tradition. Also, Bill Pullman is really cute in this movie (which is not something I ever thought I’d say).

Phoebe’s Christmas Song (Friends): I think Friends truly excelled during its Thanksgiving episodes, but it had some solid Christmas moments too. Because I always love a good Phoebe song, I have to give props to her Christmas song. I also love how, in desperation because their names don’t rhyme with anything, she just does a crazy amount of mumbling after saying “Chandler and Rachel.” (Earlier, to Rachel: “Do you have a nickname? Did your dad ever call you, like, Budolph?”)

Tim + Dawn (British Office): It’s natural to draw comparisons between the British and American versions of the Office, but to me, their approaches are so different that I just like to view them on their own terms. The Christmas episode was the last of this show, and it just wraps everything up wonderfully – you think Tim and Dawn are going to have a bittersweet ending, and then she comes back, and it’s just amazing.

Somewhere in My Memory (Home Alone): How could I leave this movie off my list? For any child who grew up in the ’90s, this was the essential Christmas movie. In particular, I love the scene where Kevin goes to church and bonds with the shovel guy, who we learn is actually a nice man. In the background, a children’s choir sings “Somewhere in My Memory,” which is one of my favorite Christmas songs. So beautiful.

Turn on the Lights (New Girl): Yeah, this show is brand new, but I already love it. New Girl is the king (queen?) of funny situations turned unexpectedly poignant, and the Christmas episode was no exception. To cheer up Jess, Nick drove her through a neighborhood with great decorations. The only catch? It was 4am, so everybody had their lights turned off. The gang got out of the car and started yelling “turn on the lights” – and, wouldn’t you know, one by one, everyone on the street turned on their lights. And it was a lovely little moment. (And on a totally different note, this episode also gave us Schmidt as Sexy Santa. Love it.)

Index Card I Love You (Love Actually): Yes, this is my third Love Actually Moment on this list; what of it? Anyway, one of my favorite things about Love Actually is that it isn’t a romantic comedy where everyone winds up happily ever after – sure, some stories do, but plenty do not. This story is one of the ones that does not, and even though Mark and Juliet reach closure, it’s still sad. This scene, where he knows they can’t be together but still tells her how he feels (“because at Christmas, you tell the truth”) is impossibly romantic and terribly bittersweet.

(above photo collage from here)

Christmas Football (Miracle): This is another severely underrated movie. I love this scene because it captures the camaraderie among the players so well and I think it also captures how much the coach cares for them, even if he can’t always express it. Also, I love the Carter speech overlaid with them playing football. So nice.

Caroling for Abed (Community): I could have picked a moment from any of Community’s three Christmas episodes – season one’s Christmas fight was great, and season two’s claymation Christmas was the epitome of brilliance. But I give the prize to season three, when the gang arrives at Abed’s apartment, singing a carol and preventing him from spending the holiday alone. An unexpectedly sweet moment, and one made all the more poignant by the fact that the show is on indefinite hiatus now (sob.)

What are your favorite Christmas pop culture moments?

Things That Are Awesome, Vol. 14

The weekly roundup of internet fabulosity (yeah, that’s a word):

  1. Brady Hoke is awesome. That’s all.
  2. One Woman A Capella Disney Medley. This is incredible – especially they way she layered in so many clips and all the costumes. Also, I can sing all the lyrics to every one of these songs. It’s basically my childhood embodied in a You Tube clip.
  3. 58 Reasons Why I Love Community. I wish more people watched this show. It’s flat-out fantastic. (My favorite from this list is Troy’s reaction to LeVar Burton. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard at a recurring gag before).
  4. A compilation of movie poster cliches. I never realized it until looking at this, but all movies posters are basically identical. Crazy.
  5. This makes law students sound really entitled, but, seriously…GTFO of our reading room!
  6. A parody of Leo’s quest for an Oscar. So good. And, yes, I call him Leo. We go way back.
  7. Though I adore Anthropologie, even I can appreciate a good Anthroparodie. Too funny, especially the description of their “floaty, flouncy, owl-related, faux-antique, hand-made, twee apparel and trinketry.” I love faux-antique owl-related products! That’s why Anthro gets me every damn time.
  8. Bon Iver is my official “I need to mellow out so I’m gonna listen to this” study music.
  9. I love New Girl, and Schmidt is by far my favorite character on that show. So, you can imagine how much I adore this.
  10. I know I’ve been complaining about finals a lot lately, but this article is just too good not to link. I mean, the title alone pretty much sums it up – “Look, We Can Either Study for Our Law School Finals, or We Can Bring About the Violent Dissolution of the American Legal System.” McSweeney’s, you get me.

Want more awesome? I’ve got it like whoa.
