This summer, my sister, my best friend, and I had a tradition: each Monday night, we would get together and cook a meal. With all of us having super busy work schedules (and my sister being lucky enough to peace out of Manhattan each weekend and head to the shore), we knew we had to set aside time to see each other or risk never hanging out at all. The plan worked really well, but near the end of summer, we ran out of steam on the whole “home-cooked meal thing.” What did we decide to do instead? A little inebriated painting, of course.
I’ve had several friends attend similar “paint and wine nights” before – where you bring your own wine to a class and are taught, step-by-step, how to make a particular painting. In New York, I had heard good things about Paint Along, so that’s where we headed – and we had a great time too. If this is something you’re interested in, I highly recommend checking Groupon or Living Social before you purchase your class, as you can often score a good deal that way.
During our class, we made paintings of the Colosseum. I was surprised at how difficult I found painting to be; I consider myself pretty skilled with arts and craft-type things, but this was tough! I really liked the fun atmosphere of our group (wine helped), the step-by-step instructions, and the fact that we got to create and take home full-size canvas paintings.
Here’s a look at how my own painting came together, bit by bit:
And, voila! Behold my masterpiece:
Taking a class at Paint Along (or at any similar paint and wine place, I suppose) was an experience I would highly recommend, and my friends and I have already talked about going back again. The only complaint I had was that our allotted class time – two hours – didn’t seem sufficient to complete such a complicated painting, and I felt rushed at the end. Overall, however, it was a really fun night!
