One of my favorite things about the Christmas season in New York has to be the shop windows: glittery, glamourous, cheerful, and bright, these windows always make me smile whenever I walk by (even if walking by entails squeeeeeezing by a crush of tourists and shoppers, as it so often does in New York). Being in Europe this fall, I was eager to see what stores here had to offer by way of Christmas finery. Boy, have they delivered.
I got my first glimpse in London, way back at the end of October. I stopped by Selfridges on my weekend in the city and was happy to see their holiday windows up already – any place that decorates for Christmas this early has my heart for sure. I got to the store about a half hour before it opened – not intentionally! – and this turned out to be perfect as it gave me time to properly ogle each and every window.
The theme at Selfridges this year is “Journey to the Stars,” and each window represents a sign of the zodiac. While they aren’t necessarily the traditional red-and-green, snowflake-and-Santa Christmas windows one might expect, they are wonderful: detailed, imaginative, and striking. Here’s a peek at each:
Aries: “Wild at Heart”
Taurus: “She Will Move Mountains”
Gemini: “Power of Two”
Cancer: “Children of the Moon”
Leo: “Lionhearted Pride”
Virgo: “The Cosmic Purist”
Libra: “Queens of Peace”
Scorpio: “Lovers in the Lair”
Sagittarius: “Free as a Bird”
Capricorn: “Salt of the Earth”
Aquarius: “March to the Beat of Their Own Drum”
Pisces: “Ladies of the Lake”
Aren’t they all so striking? I love that you can see bits and pieces of Oxford Street in the background, too. For my money, I found Leo the most memorable, with that big golden sunburst in the background. I also have to give a shout out to my own sign, Capricorn – I love the dramatic backbend of the mannequin. And I also loved the vibrant colors in Pisces. Okay, okay – I basically loved them all. Which one’s your favorite?
