Whenever a first time visitor to New York asks me what spots he or she absolutely must visit, one of my first answers is always the same: Top of the Rock!
Top of the Rock, the aptly-named observation deck atop Rockefeller Center, has some of my very favorite views in the city. You can see the Empire State Building, One World Trade Center, and Central Park in all its glory. And while the Empire State Building might be the landmark everyone first thinks of going to the top of, for my money, Top of the Rock beats it by a mile. Trust me. The panoramas are incredible.
And though I said that I highly recommend Top of the Rock for first time visitors, that doesn’t mean that as a New York resident who’s already visited it several times I don’t enjoy the place just as much. In fact, I can never pass up the chance to go, a task made even easier by the fact that it’s only a few blocks from my office. I met up with a friend for a sunset visit one random day after work this summer and, despite the throngs of other visitors who picked that time of day too, it was stunning. Standing up there during a gorgeous golden hour, I couldn’t help but have one of those man-I’m-so-lucky-to-live-in-New-York moments. Can you blame me?
